Mayor Arlene Schwartz proclaims June 2025 as Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Margate

The Margate City Commission has officially proclaimed June 2025 as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and support for those affected by this devastating disease. Mayor Arlene Schwartz emphasized the profound impact of Alzheimer’s, which affects over 7.2 million Americans, including approximately 58,000 individuals in Florida and nearly 48,000 in Broward County alone.

During the meeting, the mayor noted that Alzheimer’s disease is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States and the only one among the top ten causes that cannot currently be prevented, cured, or slowed. The financial burden is staggering, with caregivers across the nation providing an estimated 18 billion hours of unpaid care valued at over $413 billion. In Florida, more than 870,000 caregivers contribute over 1.4 billion hours of unpaid care, valued at around $29 billion.

The proclamation aims to recognize the efforts of families, friends, and caregivers who support those living with Alzheimer’s, as well as the researchers working tirelessly to find a cure. The city of Margate is joining forces with the Alzheimer’s Association to promote awareness and raise funds to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by the disease.

This initiative not only seeks to honor those impacted by Alzheimer’s but also aims to foster community support and understanding, reinforcing the importance of collective action in addressing this pressing health issue. As the city prepares for June 2025, residents are encouraged to participate in awareness activities and support local initiatives aimed at combating Alzheimer’s disease.
