Louisiana House Creates Task Force to Study Incurable STD Public Health Outcomes

The Louisiana Legislature convened on August 29, 2025, to address the pressing public health issue of incurable sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The meeting focused on a resolution to create a task force aimed at studying the public health outcomes related to these diseases, which include hepatitis B, herpes, HIV, and HPV.

The resolution highlights the ongoing concern of high STI rates in Louisiana and references previous legislative efforts, such as House Bill 436 from the 2024 session, which sought to amend the penalties for intentional exposure to HIV. Additionally, House Bill 76 from the 2025 session aimed to establish a new crime for the intentional infection of an incurable STI. The task force will consist of various members, including state representatives, health committee chairs, and representatives from health organizations and the Louisiana District Attorney's Association. The group is tasked with assessing factors contributing to high STI rates and developing recommendations for the legislature before the 2026 session.

The resolution stipulates that the task force will elect its leadership during its first meeting, scheduled no later than September 1, 2025. Members will serve without compensation, except for reimbursement of expenses, and the Louisiana Department of Health will provide necessary support. The findings of the task force are expected to be reported to the House of Representatives prior to the next legislative session, marking a significant step in addressing public health challenges related to incurable STIs in the state.
