Hillside Schools Celebrate Growth in Multilanguage Learner Performance

Hillside Public Schools is celebrating significant academic achievements as the district prepares for the upcoming school year. During a recent meeting, it was highlighted that Hillside ranked among the top 50 schools nationwide for growth in multilingual learners, a testament to the district's commitment to educational excellence.

Superintendent's report emphasized the progress made in supporting multilingual learners, noting that many students who previously struggled in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are now meeting or exceeding state standards. This year, 21 students earned the Seal of Biliteracy in languages including French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and Portuguese, a substantial increase from just five students in previous years.

The meeting also addressed the performance of students by race and gender, revealing that while white students are performing better overall, male and female students are achieving similar results. The district is focused on identifying ways to support students who may not be performing as well, ensuring that all learners have the opportunity to succeed.

As the school year approaches, the district is gearing up for a strong start, with the first day of school set for September 2 for teachers and September 8 for students. The administration is encouraging 100% attendance on the first day, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and support.

In light of recent events, a moment of silence was observed for victims of a school shooting in Minneapolis, underscoring the district's commitment to student safety and well-being.
