Vista Mayor Demands Improved Information Sharing From County Mental Health Services

A new initiative aimed at addressing homelessness in Vista is gaining momentum, with plans for a 60-cabin site designed to provide long-term support for the chronically homeless. The project, which includes on-site case management services, is projected to offer an average stay of six months, a significant shift from the typical 30 to 60-day shelter programs.

During the Standing Committee on Homelessness meeting on August 28, 2025, city officials expressed optimism about the project, despite previous challenges. The cabins are intended to create a more stable environment for individuals needing extensive support and intervention.

However, the meeting also highlighted ongoing frustrations regarding information sharing between the city and county services. Mayor Mary voiced her concerns about the lack of communication, particularly in cases like that of a woman named Carla, who had been missing from services for weeks. The mayor emphasized the need for better collaboration and transparency, stating, “We need to be working hand in hand... if the people are in our city boundaries, then we need to have full awareness of what's going on.”

The mayor's remarks underscored a growing tension between local officials and county services, with a call for a cooperative relationship rather than an adversarial one. She expressed her disappointment over the recurrence of encampment activity in Vista, which she linked to the county's programs, urging for more supervision and support from county officials.

As Vista moves forward with its cabin project, the city is also seeking to strengthen its partnership with the county to ensure effective management of homelessness and mental health services.
