Jake Muse, CEO of Maui Nui Venison, responded by explaining that pet food does not require USDA oversight, making it easier for businesses to enter this market. Muse shared that his company currently harvests around 15,000 deer annually and employs 43 full-time staff members, indicating a successful business model centered on converting deer into food products for the community.

The conversation underscored the economic potential of deer meat, not only for pet food but also for broader community consumption. Muse emphasized that his company has reinvested profits back into operations over the past 14 years, successfully processing over 68,000 deer on Maui. This ongoing effort not only addresses local wildlife management but also supports the local economy by creating jobs and providing food options.
