Hampton City Council's recent work session highlighted the transformative impact of the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), showcasing a new success coach model designed to empower both youth participants and emerging professionals. Tashi Patterson, a senior administrative assistant in the Office of Youth and Young Adult Opportunities, introduced the initiative, emphasizing its dual focus on mentorship and leadership development.

During the session, success coaches Alexa Gaines, Yajimai Prempeh, and Demir Borders shared their experiences, illustrating how the program has evolved. Gaines, a former participant turned coach, expressed her passion for community development, stating, "This summer has been especially meaningful as I've come full circle." Prempeh, who shadowed a city attorney, noted the program's role in confirming her aspirations in law, while Borders highlighted the importance of support and communication in bridging gaps between youth and supervisors.

The success coach model has proven effective, with 87 youth supported this summer, representing over half of the program's participants. The coaches not only provided mentorship but also acted as mediators and advocates, ensuring a structured support system that enhances both individual outcomes and overall program operations.

Councilwoman Harper, a former SYEP participant herself, praised the program's evolution and its significant impact on youth development. Councilman Bowman echoed her sentiments, commending the courage of the young coaches and the value of their experiences.

As the program continues to grow, the city council remains committed to investing in the future of its youth, recognizing the lasting benefits of such initiatives in shaping the next generation of leaders.
