Midland City Council is setting its sights on economic growth through enhanced downtown programming, aiming to draw more visitors and businesses to the area. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that growth is self-sustaining and bolsters the city’s long-term fiscal health.

During the recent budget workshop, officials highlighted that the city’s growth strategy is primarily driven by two key departments: airports and development services. These departments are crucial in connecting Midland to regional, national, and global markets, thereby attracting visitors and supporting local commerce. The airport plays a vital role in generating enterprise revenue, while development services streamline infrastructure planning and permitting processes, making it easier for new opportunities to translate into taxable value for the community.

The budget overview revealed that the airport and development services are central to Goal 1 of the city’s financial plan, which accounts for nearly 10% of the total budget. Notably, over 80% of this budget is funded through non-general sources, including the airport and hotel-motel funds, with the remaining 17% coming from the general fund.

Looking ahead to fiscal year 2026, the council reaffirmed its commitment to capital improvements at the Midland International Air and Space Port. Plans include expanding the terminal, upgrading entrances, and adding parking facilities, all aimed at enhancing the airport's capacity and service quality.

This focus on infrastructure and programming is expected to not only attract more visitors but also stimulate economic activity, reinforcing Midland's position as a thriving community. The council's proactive approach signals a clear intent to invest in the future, ensuring that growth benefits all residents and businesses in Midland.
