In a recent meeting at Gallatin City Hall, city officials gathered to discuss critical traffic improvements aimed at enhancing safety and efficiency in the area surrounding the proposed Fox And Harbor Marina. City Engineer Nick Tuttle presented findings from a comprehensive traffic impact study, which revealed significant concerns regarding the intersections at Douglas Bend Road and Foxland Boulevard, particularly during peak hours.

Tuttle highlighted that the study indicated a failing level of service at the intersection during the morning rush, with delays averaging 53 seconds for vehicles approaching from Foxland Boulevard. To address this issue, the study recommended the installation of an all-way stop, which would improve the level of service from an "F" to a "D." However, Tuttle emphasized that while this solution would alleviate some congestion, it would still result in considerable delays, particularly for northbound traffic.

The more favorable recommendation from the study was the construction of a roundabout at the same intersection. This option promises to reduce delays to under 10 seconds during peak hours and significantly improve traffic flow, with only a three-car queue projected at the worst times. Tuttle noted that if budget were not a concern, the roundabout would be the clear choice for long-term traffic management.

Another focal point of the discussion was the access to the boat ramp, where current conditions create bottlenecks due to a short turn lane. The study suggested prohibiting left turns into the boat ramp from Douglas Bend Road, directing drivers instead to utilize the proposed roundabout for access. This change aims to streamline traffic and prevent further congestion on Nashville Pike.

Concerns were raised by council members regarding the feasibility of the roundabout, particularly its size and ability to accommodate larger vehicles, such as trucks and trailers. Tuttle reassured attendees that the design would be adequate for such traffic, with plans for a roundabout diameter of at least 110 feet. He also acknowledged the need for clear signage to guide drivers unfamiliar with the new traffic patterns.

As the meeting progressed, council members expressed mixed feelings about the proposed solutions. While some viewed the roundabout as a necessary improvement, others questioned whether it would effectively deter drivers from making left turns into the boat ramp area. Tuttle remained optimistic, asserting that the design would discourage such maneuvers, especially for those towing boats.
