Cameron County officials are facing urgent calls to address recruitment and retention challenges within the local law enforcement community. During a recent meeting of the Commissioner’s Court, representatives from the Cameron County Sheriff's Deputies Association highlighted the pressing need for competitive wages and benefits to retain experienced officers.

Steve Ayala, a representative for the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas, expressed condolences to Commissioner Lopez for a personal tragedy while emphasizing the broader struggles faced by the sheriff's office. He noted that neighboring agencies are aggressively recruiting officers with better pay and benefits, leaving Cameron County at a disadvantage. Ayala urged county leaders to take meaningful action to support law enforcement personnel who are committed to serving the community.

Hugo Salinas, president of the Cameron County Sheriff's Deputies Association, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the issue is not merely about pay but about fairness and the long-term health of the department.
