Sunnyvale's Town Council has taken a significant step towards improving traffic safety and infrastructure by awarding a contract for the Beltline Intersection Improvement Project. This decision, made during the council meeting on August 11, 2025, aims to address longstanding traffic congestion and safety concerns at one of the town's busiest corridors.

Beltline Road serves as a vital north-south route, facilitating local, regional, and commercial traffic while connecting residential neighborhoods, schools, and major highways. With the recent population growth and development in Sunnyvale, traffic volumes have surged, leading to extended delays during peak hours and an increased risk of accidents. The existing infrastructure, including intersection geometry and traffic signal timing, has proven inadequate to meet current demands.

The planned improvements will focus on reconstructing and enhancing the intersections at Towne East and Beltline, as well as Creekside and Beltline. Key upgrades will include additional turn lanes, modernized traffic signal systems, improved crosswalks, ADA-compliant ramps, enhanced drainage infrastructure, and pavement rehabilitation. These enhancements are expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and increase safety for all users, including pedestrians.

The project not only aims to extend the service life of the roadway but also to enhance mobility and pedestrian connectivity, ultimately improving the quality of life for Sunnyvale residents and visitors. The interim town manager has been authorized to execute all necessary documents related to the contract, marking a crucial step forward in addressing the community's infrastructure needs.
