Nassau County School Board officials are rethinking their bus fleet management strategy, emphasizing a shift towards a more efficient replacement plan. During the August 11 workshop, board members discussed the importance of adhering to a rule that mandates replacing 10% of the bus fleet annually. However, they acknowledged that the existing guidelines lack clarity, leading to varied interpretations and potential pitfalls.

The board has found success in a new approach: purchasing a larger batch of buses every five years instead of the traditional annual replacement. This strategy has proven to be cost-effective, allowing the district to maintain a fleet of warranty-covered buses that are actively used, while older buses serve as backups for field trips and emergencies. One board member highlighted the financial benefits of this method, stating, "Over the course of the last 5 years, absolutely, 100%, we were better off doing buying a group and replacing roughly 50% of the fleet."

The discussion also touched on the historical context of budget cuts that previously left the fleet in disrepair. Members expressed satisfaction with the current plan, noting that it has resulted in safer buses on the road and significant cost savings. The board is currently working with a budget of $2.4 million for transportation, which includes funds for bus leases.
