Bedford's Animal Shelter Advisory Board reported significant changes in animal intake and management during their recent meeting on August 11, 2025. The board highlighted a notable increase in cat intake, rising from 101 to 113 over the past year. This uptick reflects ongoing efforts to address the needs of both adoptable and feral cats in the community.

The board noted that while many adoptable cats are placed with local organizations, some are sent to facilities outside the city and even out of state. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that socialized cats find suitable homes, enhancing the overall adoption rate.

In wildlife management, the shelter has made strides in reducing euthanasia rates. The number of euthanized wildlife decreased from 15 to 12, all due to medical reasons. Additionally, the shelter successfully increased the number of animals released back into the wild, jumping from 11 to 29. This reflects a commitment to rehabilitating and returning wildlife to their natural habitats.

The total intake of wildlife also saw an increase, rising from 99 to 133. The board discussed various species they manage, including raccoons, possums, birds, and skunks, while confirming that they do not currently handle bobcats or coyotes.
