During a recent meeting of the Metropolitan Development Commission in Indianapolis, significant discussions centered around the expansion plans of Chatard High School, which aims to enhance its athletic facilities by constructing six new tennis courts. The school has acquired four homes adjacent to its campus on Evanston Avenue to facilitate this development, completing the purchase of the last property earlier this spring.

Brian Tuohy, representing Chatard High School, outlined the school's need for dedicated tennis courts, as current arrangements have proven inadequate. The proposed site will not feature lighting or striping for pickleball, addressing concerns raised by local residents during a neighborhood meeting. Approximately 20 community members attended this meeting, expressing overwhelming support for the project while requesting specific limitations to minimize noise and disruption.

To ensure safe access for students and city vehicles, an easement approximately 13 to 15 feet wide will be established on Evanston Avenue. This easement will facilitate traffic flow to and from the school, as well as provide access for utility services.

The commission reviewed and approved 13 petitions of no appeal related to various zoning matters, including the Chatard project. The discussions highlighted the importance of community engagement in development projects, as well as the school’s commitment to addressing neighborhood concerns.

As the commission moves forward, the approval of these petitions marks a significant step in the ongoing development of the area, reflecting a balance between institutional growth and community interests. The next steps will involve finalizing the construction plans and ensuring compliance with the commitments made to local residents.
