During a recent Village Council Workshop in Wellington, officials discussed the allocation of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and the State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) program, highlighting their ongoing commitment to community development and housing rehabilitation.

This fiscal year, Wellington has received $289,551 through CDBG, primarily directed towards the housing rehabilitation program. Additionally, $40,000 will support public services, including the SWAG program. A historical map was presented, illustrating the impact of these funding programs throughout the village, showcasing numerous projects that have benefited the community since their inception.

While the current grant amount is slightly lower than previous years, officials noted that this fluctuation is due to a federal allocation formula that changes annually. The highest funding received was just under $300,000 in the previous fiscal year.

The council also authorized a contract with DMS Contractors for a significant SHIP project aimed at rehabilitating a home for a special needs applicant at 13605 Barberry Drive. This project, which totals over $62,000, includes essential improvements such as a new roof, electrical panel, HVAC system, windows, and an ADA-compliant bathroom remodel. This initiative is part of the village's commitment to allocate 20% of its funding towards special needs projects, ensuring that vulnerable community members receive necessary support.

The council expressed satisfaction with DMS Contractors, noting their status as the lowest responsive bidder and their previous successful collaborations. The discussions underscored Wellington's ongoing efforts to enhance housing accessibility and improve living conditions for its residents, particularly those with special needs.
