The Wellington Village Council has announced the launch of a new traffic safety program aimed at reducing speeding in school zones. Set to go live on August 11, the initiative will implement a 30-day warning period for drivers who exceed speed limits near schools.

During this warning phase, any drivers caught speeding will receive a notice in the mail detailing the date, time, and speed of their violation. The goal is to raise awareness among motorists, encouraging them to slow down and pay closer attention while driving in school zones.

Following the warning period, which concludes on September 15, drivers who continue to violate speed limits will receive a formal notice of violation. They will have 30 days to either pay the fine or contest the violation. If they choose to contest, the case will enter a hearing process. However, if they do not respond within the 30 days, the violation may escalate to a Uniform Traffic Citation, which could involve further penalties.
