Bexar County officials have taken a significant step towards enhancing youth sports facilities in the region by approving a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Alamo Community College District (ACCD). This agreement will allow Bexar County Parks and Recreation to assess the feasibility of developing approximately 18 acres at the North Campus location for youth sports fields.

During the recent Commissioners Court meeting, Priscilla Camacho, representing ACCD, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to serve not only Bexar County but also surrounding areas. The proposed site, which is part of a larger 145-acre parcel, is envisioned to include an education and training center alongside the new park facilities.

Commissioner Ken McGlamory emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that the 18 acres in question are currently in a floodplain, making them unsuitable for traditional construction. However, they present an excellent opportunity for developing youth baseball and soccer fields, addressing a growing demand for such facilities in the northern region of the county.

The plan includes the possibility of adding eight youth baseball fields and four soccer fields, which would significantly enhance local sports offerings. Additionally, there is potential for a partnership with the YMCA, which could manage the athletic fields, further alleviating the county's responsibilities.

The motion to approve the MOU was unanimously supported by the commissioners, marking a collaborative effort to improve recreational opportunities for the community. This development aligns with broader goals to enhance public amenities and support youth engagement in sports, fostering a healthier and more active community in Bexar County.
