Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) is set to enhance its live music program, a key feature of the airport experience, by increasing performances from four to five days a week. Starting this August, the airport will host 25 shows weekly, aiming for a total of 105 shows each month. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to celebrate Austin's rich music culture and improve customer satisfaction within the airport's concession areas.
The transition of the music program to ACME, a new arts and culture management entity, is underway. Erica Shavley, the music entertainment division manager for ACME, outlined the steps being taken to ensure a smooth transition. This includes creating a comprehensive memo to inform staff about new processes, scheduling, and communication systems. An in-person tour of the airport will also take place to assess current facilities and plan for future expansions, which may include additional performance stages.
The transition is expected to be completed by October 1, with a focus on maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring that the music program continues without disruption. The goal is to create a cohesive approach to music at the airport, integrating it into the broader ecosystem of services offered to travelers.
Commissioners expressed their support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of a well-coordinated transition that does not negatively impact current operations or artists already performing at the airport. The discussions highlighted a commitment to inclusivity and the potential for new artists to join the lineup, ensuring that the vibrant music scene in Austin remains a staple of the airport experience.
As the airport moves forward with these changes, it aims to not only enhance the travel experience but also provide a reliable source of income for local musicians, reinforcing Austin's identity as the "Live Music Capital of the World."
