During the recent San Patricio County Commissioner’s Court meeting, significant discussions centered around proposed changes to employee insurance rates and funding requests for historical preservation efforts.
One of the key topics was the adjustment of insurance rates for county employees, which have been rising due to increased medical and prescription costs. The proposed changes for 2026 include a $3 increase for employee-only coverage, a $95 increase for employee-spouse coverage, a $68 increase for employee children or dependents, and a $112 increase for family coverage. These adjustments aim to stabilize the county's reserves, which have been declining. To help offset these costs, the court is considering increasing the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) from 3% to 4%, potentially providing employees with raises that could range from $4 to $115, depending on their coverage.
In addition to the insurance discussions, the San Patricio County Historical Commission made a compelling case for increased funding. The commission requested $10,000 for the fiscal year 2026 to maintain and promote over 93 historical markers in the county. The vice chair of the commission emphasized the importance of preserving local history, noting that many historical sites are currently neglected. The funding would not only help maintain these sites but also enable the commission to apply for matching grants, which have previously been out of reach due to budget constraints.
The court approved the funding request, recognizing the potential for historical preservation to enhance tourism and community pride.
Looking ahead, the court plans to revisit the insurance rate proposals and finalize the budget by the end of the month. These discussions reflect ongoing efforts to balance employee needs with the preservation of San Patricio County's rich history, ultimately aiming to benefit the community as a whole.
