The Abilene Library Advisory Board meeting highlighted a series of successful summer programs and an exciting future for library services in the community. Among the standout initiatives was the continuation of the popular Try That Art Night series, which will extend into August and September due to its overwhelming success. This creative art series for teens and adults has captured the interest of many, showcasing the library's commitment to engaging the community.
Children's programming also thrived this summer, with weekly STEAM activities and the beloved Once Upon a Storytime featuring special guests like Disney princesses. Outdoor sessions, including Art in the Park, attracted families despite the heat, while master gardener workshops provided valuable knowledge for local gardening enthusiasts.
The library's literacy initiative, "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten," saw six children complete the challenge this summer, with 518 currently enrolled. The program's success has been bolstered by the introduction of the Beanstack tracking system, making it easier for families to participate.
Looking ahead, the library is gearing up for the 2026 summer reading theme, which promises to feature dinosaurs, sparking excitement among young readers.
In addition to these programs, the board discussed the ongoing construction of two new recreation centers, which will each house a small branch library. This integration aims to enhance neighborhood access to library services and foster collaboration with parks and recreation. Both facilities are set to open in spring 2026, marking a significant step forward in expanding community resources.
