The Carpinteria Architectural Review Board convened on July 31, 2025, to discuss the proposed construction of a new kindergarten building at Aliso Elementary School. The project aims to replace seven portable classrooms with a single-story, 6,467 square foot structure designed to accommodate all kindergarten students.

Megan Mussoff, the project presenter, outlined that the new building will feature four classrooms, each equipped with attached restrooms, and a central courtyard. The maximum height of the building will be 27 feet 4 inches. The existing parking lot will be slightly reconfigured to ensure adequate fire access and to include ADA-compliant parking spaces, resulting in a net loss of five parking spaces.

The site, located in a flood hazard area, will comply with municipal flood damage protection regulations by elevating the building to 15 feet above mean sea level. The design incorporates architectural elements consistent with existing school buildings, including red clay mission tile roofing and white plaster walls.

The project is situated on a 7.79-acre campus, bordered by Franklin Creek and residential neighborhoods. The review board noted that the project meets all zoning and development standards, including setbacks and landscaping requirements.

The board's discussions highlighted the importance of maintaining safety and accessibility while enhancing educational facilities in the community. The next steps will involve further reviews and approvals as the project moves forward.
