In a recent government meeting, officials from the City of Panama City outlined significant progress on multiple downtown improvement projects aimed at revitalizing the area. The discussions highlighted three major initiatives currently underway, including the Harrison Avenue streetscapes and two designated areas known as Area 011 and Area 012.
Area 011 focuses on enhancing the infrastructure around Destination Panama City, covering parts of Government Street, La Verne, and East Beach Drive. Meanwhile, Area 012 extends further north, encompassing Park Avenue and Mackenzie Park. The West Beach Drive roadway improvement project, which is nearly 95% designed, is also set to commence soon, with bidding expected in September. This project aims to enhance the section of West Beach Drive from Sixth Street to Harrison Avenue, with construction anticipated to begin before the holiday season and last approximately ten months.
City officials noted that inflation and supply chain challenges had previously hindered progress, but recent improvements in these areas have allowed for additional funding from grants. This has enabled the city to plan for further enhancements in Area 012, which may go out to bid in 2026.
The meeting also addressed the ongoing Harrison Avenue streetscapes project, which is on track for completion by late October or early November. This phase includes significant underground utility work, with visible progress already made in leveling and preparing the area for concrete installation.
Additionally, the refurbishment of the historic Martin Theater was discussed, a project expected to take 18 to 24 months. This initiative will restore the theater and surrounding buildings to their original state, enhancing the cultural landscape of downtown Panama City.
Overall, the city is committed to minimizing disruptions during these projects, ensuring that the community can continue to thrive while improvements are made. As these initiatives progress, they are expected to significantly enhance the downtown area, contributing to its economic and cultural revitalization.
