San Francisco will officially recognize August 2025 as Black Business Month, following a resolution passed during a recent government meeting. This initiative honors the 22nd annual National Black Business Month, which celebrates the contributions of Black entrepreneurs throughout history and in the present day.

The resolution highlights the legacy of influential figures such as Captain William Alexander Leisdorf, one of San Francisco's first major Black entrepreneurs, who played a crucial role in shaping the city's early economy in the 1840s. It also acknowledges the vibrant community of Black-owned businesses today, particularly along the Third Street corridor in District 10, which includes establishments like Gumbo Social, Yvonne Suites, and Smoke Soul Kitchen.

In addition to celebrating these businesses, the resolution calls for the city to enhance its investment in equitable economic development, ensuring that support for Black businesses extends beyond just one month each year. This commitment aims to uplift and sustain the contributions of Black entrepreneurs to San Francisco's cultural and economic landscape.

The resolution was championed by Supervisor Walton, who expressed gratitude to summer intern Isra Musa and year-round interns Damien Rochelle and Carl Levi for their efforts in bringing this initiative to fruition. The recognition of Black Business Month is seen as a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for Black entrepreneurs in the city.
