Brian Gatewood, founder and president of Innovative Changemakers, shared his inspiring journey and the mission of his organization during a recent discussion. Gatewood, who navigated the juvenile detention system in his youth, emphasized the importance of mentorship and support for young people facing similar challenges. "I want to utilize the things that I've experienced to give back," he stated, highlighting his commitment to uplifting the youth in the community.
Innovative Changemakers aims to provide alternatives to hazardous lifestyles, such as gang involvement and drug use. Gatewood explained that the organization focuses on empowering both youth and adults, helping them recognize their potential and value. "We ask, where do you see yourself? What’s stopping you?" he said, illustrating the program's approach to fostering dreams and aspirations.
Among the impactful initiatives discussed was the "Innovative Cuts" program, which teaches barbering skills while also addressing mental health and communication. This program not only equips youth with practical skills but also positions them as first responders in their communities. Gatewood noted that the organization has expanded significantly, now serving hundreds of youth and adults through various programs, including peer mentorship and in-school support.
Looking ahead, Gatewood envisions a central community space where Innovative Changemakers can host programs and empower individuals. "I see it as a community center with classrooms and a basketball court," he said, expressing his desire to create a hub for support and growth in Pierce County.
The conversation underscored the critical role of mentorship and community engagement in shaping the lives of young people, with Gatewood's work serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
