In a recent special meeting of the Carlsbad City Council, community members gathered to honor Bonnie and Gunnar, the 2025 Citizens of the Year. Their contributions to the city, particularly through volunteer work, have made a significant impact on the local community.

Bonnie has been a dedicated volunteer with Love on a Leash since February 2007, bringing therapy dogs to schools, senior communities, and libraries in Carlsbad and beyond. Notably, she has introduced innovative programs such as taking therapy dogs to high schools during finals week, providing comfort and support to students during a stressful time. Additionally, she has led the Paws to Read program at the Carlsbad Library and the Coe Library, where children improve their literacy skills by reading to dogs. This initiative has been described as "magic and pure joy," as it helps children build confidence and develop a love for reading.

During the meeting, Bonnie expressed her surprise at receiving the honor, noting that while she and Gunnar have not served on city boards or committees, they have remained active in the community through music and therapy dog visits. Gunnar, a former bass teacher at San Diego State University, has also contributed to the local music scene by expanding orchestras at Carlsbad High School and coaching at MiraCosta College.
