The St. Augustine Community Redevelopment Agency convened on July 28, 2025, to discuss key updates regarding the city’s budget and ongoing infrastructure projects, particularly focusing on the M.L. King Streetscape project.
The meeting began with a review of administrative costs associated with the agency's operations. A commissioner raised concerns about understanding the structure of these costs rather than simply advocating for cuts. The discussion emphasized the importance of evaluating the necessity and efficiency of staffing and administrative expenses, suggesting a more analytical approach to budget management.
Following the budget discussion, the focus shifted to the M.L. King Streetscape project. A verbal update was provided on the status of the Doctor M.L.K. Avenue Streetscape design and construction project, which has reached 90% completion in its planning phase. The proposed design includes two 10-foot travel lanes, a 7-foot parking lane on the eastern side, and 6-foot sidewalks on both sides, all fitting within the existing 40-foot right-of-way.
However, funding remains a significant challenge. The estimated cost for the project is around $7 million, while the agency currently has just over $1 million allocated for new funding. Efforts to secure additional funding through a RAISE grant were unsuccessful, prompting the agency to explore alternative funding sources.
Additionally, the project involves transitioning overhead electricity lines to underground, necessitating the acquisition of permanent easements, primarily on private properties along the M.L.K. Corridor. The agency is collaborating with Florida Power & Light to facilitate this process.
In conclusion, while the agency is making progress on the M.L. King Streetscape project, funding uncertainties and the need for further analysis of administrative costs were highlighted as critical issues requiring ongoing attention. The agency plans to continue exploring funding opportunities and will keep the community informed as the project develops.
