The San Francisco City Commission has approved a significant investment in the preservation of the War Memorial Opera House, awarding an $8.7 million contract for the replacement of its aging roof. Project Manager Simon Chu presented the urgent need for this project during the recent meeting, highlighting the roof's deteriorating condition and the potential for further damage.
The existing roof, originally constructed in 1942, has developed leaks, particularly in the stage tower, prompting the use of buckets to collect water. Additionally, recent wind damage has underscored the necessity for immediate action. The new roof will maintain the aesthetic of the historic building, aligning with the design of the adjacent Veterans Building, which underwent renovations in 2017.
The project is set to be completed within 370 calendar days and aims to restore the Opera House's integrity as a cherished cultural landmark for the city. The approval marks a crucial step in ensuring the continued use and preservation of this iconic venue, which plays a vital role in San Francisco's cultural landscape.
As the city moves forward with this project, residents can look forward to a revitalized Opera House that will continue to serve as a hub for the arts and community events.
