Newton City officials are taking significant steps to address ongoing cell service issues in key areas of the city. During the Public Facilities Committee meeting on July 16, 2025, council members highlighted persistent dropped calls and poor coverage, particularly around Beacon Street near Zervas School and Cold Spring Park.

Councilor Dan Murphy emphasized the urgent need for improved cell service in Ward 6, stating that residents experience a 100% drop rate for calls in certain locations. He proposed that Verizon consider placing equipment on the Zervas School to enhance coverage in this problematic area. The committee acknowledged the challenges of finding suitable locations for new equipment, noting that the process can take anywhere from six months to ten years.

Other councilors echoed Murphy's concerns, sharing their own experiences with dropped calls in different neighborhoods, including Northside West Newton. Councilor Kelly pointed out that her area has also suffered from poor reception for years, leading residents to rely on landlines. The committee agreed to prioritize the Woodcliff location for improvements while also recognizing the need to address other dead zones throughout the city.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to approve the proposed improvements, signaling a commitment to enhancing communication infrastructure in Newton. As the city moves forward, officials will continue to explore solutions for the identified coverage gaps, ensuring that residents can rely on their cell service without interruption.
