Wichita County's Commissioner's Court made a significant move during their recent meeting by proclaiming June 2025 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month. This proclamation, presented by Sharon Meer, supervisor for Adult Protective Services (APS), highlights the urgent need to address the alarming rates of abuse against older adults and individuals with disabilities in Texas.

In 2024 alone, Texas reported over 123,000 cases of abuse against these vulnerable populations, a figure that is believed to be grossly underreported due to stigma and fear. The proclamation emphasizes that elder abuse is a community issue that requires collective action to prevent, report, and address.

Meer urged residents to be vigilant and proactive in supporting those who may be suffering from abuse, stating, "If you know of an elder or disabled individual that needs assistance, please contact us." The APS team is committed to providing support through various services, including home safety improvements and community outreach initiatives.

The meeting also featured a heartfelt recognition of Dora De Hoyos for her ten years of dedicated service to Wichita County. Colleagues praised her positive impact on the work environment and her essential role in the community.
