A special call meeting is set to address the pressing issue of solid waste disposal assessments in Indian River County, as officials prepare for a challenging budget year ahead. During a recent budget workshop, County Administrator John Tkanic presented a proposed budget of $597.6 million for the fiscal year 2025-2026, marking a significant increase of 13.9% compared to the previous year.

Tkanic highlighted the economic uncertainties looming on the horizon, including potential cooling in the local economy and the impact of recent legislative changes on local government financing. Notably, the elimination of certain taxes is expected to result in a loss of approximately $1.5 million annually for the county, raising concerns about fiscal sustainability.

The proposed budget includes an 8.8% increase in the countywide tax roll, with a recommendation to maintain the current millage rate of 3.5475 mills for the sixth consecutive year. This decision aims to provide stability amid fluctuating real estate values, which have seen a steep decline in the county.

Tkanic emphasized the importance of prudent financial management, stating that 72.4% of general fund expenses are state-mandated, leaving limited flexibility for local decision-making.
