Dallas officials are ramping up efforts to address homelessness ahead of the FIFA World Cup, with a focus on high-risk encampments throughout the city. During a recent meeting of the Citizen Homeless Commission, leaders emphasized the importance of proactive measures rather than reactive solutions as the event approaches.

The commission outlined plans for "Phase 2," which involves maintaining current efforts while identifying and addressing priority encampments across Dallas County. Officials stressed that the goal is not to close encampments solely due to the FIFA event, but to prevent a situation similar to what occurred in New Orleans during the Super Bowl, where a temporary shelter cost $17 million over three months.

"We want to avoid a last-minute scramble for solutions," a commission member stated, highlighting the need for a strategic approach to tackle street homelessness. The aim is to make a significant impact within the next 12 months, ensuring that the city is prepared and that residents are not forced into temporary shelters just before the event.
