The Edmond City Council has approved a significant renovation project for the Pelican Bay Aquatic Center, allocating $7.2 million to address critical updates and repairs. Parks and Recreation Director Brad Rainey presented the details during the June 23 meeting, highlighting the need for extensive improvements to the facility, which has been a community favorite since its opening in 2001.

Rainey explained that the renovation will not only tackle ongoing water leaks but also enhance accessibility and safety features. The project includes the replacement of the pool deck, upgrades to the ADA access, and the addition of approximately 22 new parking spaces. The council unanimously approved the funding, sourced from the 2017 Capital Improvement Program tax, following a recommendation from the CIP advisory board.

The renovation will see the existing pool area refreshed, with new spray features for children, improved lighting, and a complete overhaul of the pool deck. Rainey emphasized that while the project is extensive, it is not a complete rebuild but rather a comprehensive renovation aimed at revitalizing the beloved facility.

With competitive bids received from four contractors, the council is set to award the project to Wind Construction, the lowest bidder. The anticipated upgrades are expected to enhance the overall experience for visitors and ensure the aquatic center remains a vibrant part of the community for years to come.
