New Castle County's Land Use Committee is making strides towards modernizing local regulations, particularly regarding drive-thru establishments. During a recent meeting on June 17, 2025, committee members discussed the removal of a long-standing restriction on drive-thrus, originally implemented in 1991.

The proposal aims to adapt to changing consumer habits, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has seen a surge in demand for drive-thru services. Notably, popular chains like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts have shifted to primarily drive-thru operations, reflecting a broader trend in the restaurant industry.

Drew, a committee member, highlighted that there are currently 11 drive-thrus operating along Concord Pike, indicating that the community has already embraced this model. The committee received positive feedback from the Councilwoman and the Community Coalition of Brandywine Hundred (CCOBH), both expressing no opposition to the proposed changes.

The committee emphasized that the adjustments align with the county's planning goals and are expected to have no negative impact on the community. Council members echoed the sentiment, with Mr. Carter advocating for redevelopment over new developments, suggesting that easing restrictions could facilitate better use of existing sites.
