Member Ross highlighted the challenges faced in recruitment, noting that the county has implemented a temporary hiring process known as DM 89. This method allows for quick staffing in emergency situations but comes with limitations. Once a DM 89 is utilized for a position, it cannot be requested again for that role, complicating future hiring efforts.
The conversation revealed a pressing need for higher pay to attract candidates. Officials are actively collaborating with personnel to benchmark salaries against comparable positions within the state. This effort aims to ensure that critical service roles, such as those in Meals on Wheels and assisted transportation, receive the compensation they deserve.
Despite ongoing recruitment efforts, including participation in county fairs, the county continues to experience fluctuations in staffing levels across services. Leaders remain committed to addressing these issues, emphasizing the importance of retaining skilled workers who provide essential services to the community.
