Milwaukee County's transportation landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, thanks to the Same Day Pilot Program aimed at enhancing accessibility for individuals with disabilities. During a recent hybrid meeting of the Milwaukee County Committee on Transportation and Transit, advocates Kevin Myers and Becky Rubanton highlighted the program's positive impact and the need for continued support.

Myers, a member of the task force overseeing the pilot program, expressed gratitude for the county board's backing, noting that initial ridership was low due to strict ride restrictions. However, modifications made in collaboration with the Milwaukee County Department of Transportation and Transit Plus have led to a notable increase in usage. "We see this program as continuing to grow, allowing individuals with a disability to live a more independent life," Myers stated.

Rubanton, co-chair of the transportation advocacy team, provided an update on the program's progress since its launch in September 2023. Initially starting with just a handful of rides, the program has surged to 221 rides in the last month alone. "Riders are satisfied with the service and noted minimal complaints," she reported, emphasizing the program's flexibility compared to previous paratransit options that required 24-hour advance scheduling.

The advocates shared compelling testimonials from users, including one rider who successfully rescheduled a doctor's appointment on short notice, showcasing the program's practicality. Both Myers and Rubanton called for ongoing partnership with county supervisors to secure future funding and ensure the program's success.

As Milwaukee County continues to adapt its transportation services, the Same Day Pilot Program stands out as a beacon of progress, promising greater independence and accessibility for those who need it most.
