Connecticut DOT enhances speed management program with new signs and training

The NVCOG TTAC Meeting held on June 4, 2025, focused on enhancing traffic safety and management in local municipalities. The meeting featured discussions on the rollout of new speed feedback signs and training programs aimed at reducing speeding on local roads.

The session began with an update on the successful implementation of a previous program that provided municipalities and tribes with two free speed feedback signs, cloud services, and speed management training, all funded by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT). The program received positive feedback from local partners, prompting the Connecticut DOT to approve a new rollout.

Presenters announced that each municipality and tribe would receive two additional, smaller speed feedback signs designed for local roads with speed limits of 40 miles per hour or less. These new signs, featuring 12-inch integers instead of the previous 15-inch ones, are intended to be more manageable and easier to relocate. They will also utilize the same batteries and cloud services as the larger signs, ensuring compatibility with existing speed management programs.

In addition to the new signs, the meeting highlighted plans to offer four speed management training classes in collaboration with the UMass Transportation Center over the next two years. These classes will be provided at no cost to the towns, allowing local traffic authorities to enhance their skills in managing speed effectively.

To facilitate the program's implementation, outreach efforts will include one-on-one meetings with local traffic authorities to address any questions and provide guidance on the new signs. Additionally, instructional videos will be made available on the program's website to assist towns in utilizing the cloud service for reporting.

Overall, the meeting underscored a commitment to improving traffic safety through innovative solutions and collaborative training efforts, with the aim of fostering safer roadways across the region.
